Got a new milling machine!!
Here are a few photos of my brand new mill. I'll cut my first chip with it this next Monday. I just finished getting everything set up and ready to go.
I have a table power feed coming next week. |

It's too long a story to tell, but I've been shut down for 2 full months. Now that this mill is ready, I'll go back to work on my orders and I'll have a few things to post on this forum for a change.

I hope this makes up in long term satisfaction for the aggravation of the "Bridgeport interlude", Don! Nice looking machine.

What amuses me with new gear is the efficiency. You get them and it makes machining certain aspects a breeze...then you think..."I can do this now! And this and..."
Pretty soon, you realize another piece of gear will help that... In the end the days are still too short. As well, sleeping and eating are intrusions into the craft. __________________ Mike |

I did get the power feed/rapid traverse installed without any troubles. Works great!
The tools mounted on the table are left over from working on a folder. The toolmakers 6" sine plate on the table is what I used to hold the blade while I milled the nail nick in the folder blade I'll show you next. This sine plate is one I made myself from scrap steel here in my shop many moons ago. I used the rotary table to relieve each liner around the pivot. The reason for doing this is to prevent any part of the blade that shows from touching the insides of the liners. That prevents scratches on the blade. This is a Birmingham mill, made in Taiwan (head) and China (body).
I purchased this machine from a local dealer with whom I've been doing business for around 20 years.Total cost was $4600.00 including the power feed F.O.B. Brownsville, TX. Now that's delivered cost, including freight, my friends. I researched the internet and couldn't find any deal anywhere close to this. If anyone is hungry for a new Bridgeport clone I'll talk to this dealer for you and maybe he'll give you a similar deal. This little folder is the first work I've done using the machine, and I'm very pleased at how smooth it is. Best I've ever used, and that says a lot. Whittler pocket knife
Here's the pocket slipjoint I'm working on. This is being made to my customer's specs, not mine, but I'm beginning to like it.
Specs are: Single wharncliffe blade 2 3/4", CPMD2, red jigged bone scales. Some of you may be interested in the fact that the bolsters on this knife handle are spot welded to the SS liners. Done correctly and heat treated afterward, the spot welds become invisible. Nothing here is finished. The blade has been heat treated but not finish sanded and everything else is very roughly ground to shape. The pins haven't been peened, just driven in so that I could grind the handle and bolsters to shape. |

And here's the finished knife.
Here's a photo of the finished folder.
This is the first CPM D2 I've used. It's too tough to grind after heat treat. |
