My first slotted guard
My first slotted guard, in bronze. How'd I do? Already learned some things to do better next time.

I plan on etching the blade, and patinating the guard. I don't know how to do all pinning or soldering it. Grinding the pin or cleaning the solder will mess up the patinas. So I'm hoping the tight fit plus JB weld will be acceptable.

Did you use a mill or drill and hand file? Either way it should work, my first hidden tang had a very large gap and I never had any issues with the JB weld coming undone.

Looks good. I would vote for the JB Weld. You can clean that up with WD-40. Another way would be to get a resist from an art supply house that sells etching supplies. Attach the guard with a pin or solder then shape it the way that you want it. Then coat the blade with the resist and apply the patina to the guard. After than coat remove the resist from the blade and remove it with mineral spirits. Then coat the guard and etch the blade and remove the resist from the guard after you've etched the blade. I did something like that with a knife that I wanted to do an acid bluing on the guard, pommel, and handle.

Nice fit. Are you going to solder it? It should be a piece of cake with a fit that good. ...Teddy

U shaped guards need to be pinned, this one is an O shaped guard and these are usually not pinned. A little JB Weld and you're good to go. I wait until I can attach the handle temporarily to apply the JB Weld. The handle will hold the guard in place while the JB sets. After that, I glue up the handle and then shape the guard and handle as a unit ...

That looks really good.
Not to hijack, but what do you mean by JB weld the guard? I keep JB weld around for repairs but never used it on a knife. I'm sure this is one of those "duh" questions, but I'm having a mental block.
Anyway- can't wait to see it done.
Thanks
Dave

A common approach is to have your guard slotted so it fits seamlessly at the ricasso and widens at the back/underneath so that you can then fill it with JB Weld to hold the guard on.
