Knife ID needed Please

Hello: I purchased this knife, but have no idea what it's intended purpose is. It is 10 inches overall length, the blade looks to be carbon steel, and no markings. Now this pointed brass tang has me thinking maybe a home made fishing, or sailing knife but not sure. I believe the handle is bone, but not sure of thay either. Does this design look familiar to anyone?

Thanks,

Wayne

I'd agree that it is most likely a home made knife. That general design is common to general purpose utility knives, camp knives, and hunting knives. The pointy guard may have had a purpose to the person who made it but more likely it's just an element of styling....

I agree. That basic style is very popular with deer hunters in my area. That one seems a little oddly proportioned though. Probably a decent hand made from an amateur maker.

Thanks: It does have a long handle on it, so maybe custom made for a big person! What is a Good way to tell if it is bone or wood handle, without grinding too much material away?

Thanks,

Wayne

The handle is wood. There's no end cap on it. If it were bone, you would see the open end where the marrow was visible ...
