Good source for Ferric Chloride?
I have always used FC from Radio Shack diluted roughly 50/50 with distilled water for a slow but detailed etch.
They are now defunct, so does anyone have any suggestions on a brand to trust (or avoid)? Liquid/powder? Does it matter? __________________ Andy Garrett https://www.facebook.com/GarrettKnives?ref=hl Charter Member - Kansas Custom Knifemaker's Association www.kansasknives.org "Drawing your knife from its sheath and using it in the presence of others should be an event complete with oos, ahhs, and questions." |

Andy I bought a 4 ounce bottle of FC powder off of Ebay and used 2 teaspoons of it in a quart of distilled water. Later added another teaspoon and equal amount of white vinegar to speed up the etching process.
It takes about 1 hour to get the deep etch I want on Alabama Damascus steel. I could add more FC, but I prefer the 1 hour time for the etching. The seller on Ebay was Loudwolf limited. This was about 3 years ago. __________________ RELH |

Andrew,
I get mine through Amazon which has numerous suppliers. I recommend getting the dry FeCl3 crystals. Loudwolf sells a bottle that will make one litre which when diluted will make 1 gallon of etchant. Gary __________________ Gary ABS,CKCA, ABKA,KGA |

Any electronic supply will have various offerings too. Just picked up a bottle for the mokume stuffs. For years I'd used a 50-50 mix and it was pretty slow. This new batch I went 3:1 ratio and it does the mokume in about 3 minutes cutting about .004" in what I have. Will have to experiment with the steels to see. The ambient temp was 67F to do this so I would imagine that at warmer temps the etching could be pretty fast so more dilution may be needed. Somewhere in the 5-10 minute range would be good.
