Thumbs up How to line up your drill press table square to the spindle

On other Knet forums I've been asked to demonstrate how to line up a drill press.

Here are two different methods.

First, bend a coathanger, heavy wire or rod like the picture. Place that in your spindle, place a paper on the table and bring the table up and lock it so the rod just barely touches the paper.

Adjust your table so that the rod touches the paper right and left when you sweep it around by turning the chuck.. If the rod sweeps heavy on either side from front to back, it will be necessary to shim the table to spindle coulumn.

NOTE!! Always bring the table up, not downward, and lock it to the column to avoid sag.

Sweep the table 360 degrees and adjust the table until you're satisfied.

Here's a better way if you have a dial indicator. Set the indicator so it is touching .005" or so and sweep it all around.

Adjust as necessary.

This how a dial test indicator can be used to do the same thing. It's advisable to set a parallel under the indicator point and move the parallel as you sweep. This will avoid damaging the indicator when it strikes the edge of a slot in the table

So there we have it. A bent rod is sufficient. The indicators are more precise and will show how much to move the table.

Remember to tighten the table collar on the drill press column each time you make an adjustment.

It never occurred to me before, but this is the first time I've actually seen a demo on how to square up the drill press table. Thanks, Don!

Thanks for the refresher Don. One of the great tidbits from the online folder class.

Take care, Craig

Hi Don,
Always around here and there. Still just a hobby, but a serious one. I'll never forget, and always appreciate that first fixed blade class that you walked us through. I'm finally able to swing a forging class for this spring. So, fun stuff ahead in '08.

Take care and no more stories about needing Doctor work, Craig
