Last years thermite
Here's the thermite smelt from Jack Jacks hammerin last year, got about a pound & a quarter (ish) of iron, but I thought that all that heat was just going to waste, so it's gonna be four smaller (6 pound) charges this year with different things in the core & catchment in order to make some useable steel. Wish me luck, but here's last years entry into the 5,000 degree club: (warning: some cussing involved)

Great video! What type of button did you get? Don't worry about cussing, this is my theory:
Cussing=passion=commitment=success. see,... it's like a little formula. |

Thanks guys, I didn't sort out any kind of catchment, just a terracotta base, so got a kind of medallion from the drain hole in the bottom planter (I used two just in case of catastrophic failure) & a smattering from roundabouts. It was only the third thermite I'd run & only the first achully filmed, so no others yet Jerry, but the next hammerin will be end of May & I'm gearing up with a crucible catchment in vermicullite & will be seeding the run with a core of steel which I'm hoping will melt good. I'll do a control run with no steel, one with bits from a failed wootz cake, one with 1095 shot & 52100 bearings & one with ground W2. Should be fun
