Oaxacan Neo-Tribal Metalsmith Work (PICS)

My son and I travel down to Oaxaca Mexico regularly. Oaxaca is located in the dense mountains of southern Mexico. Down there the smiths do it Neo-Tribal, forging with real charcoal, and using basically what they can scrounge and put together to make the tools they need to work and survive. Here's a cool hatchet I got from one of the smiths there. The head goes through a tapered hole in the handle, and wedges it tight with each chop. These were on the old Outpost that went down, and I thought deserved another look before moving over to the gallery.

Rear view of the hatchet. See how the tang fits through the handle?

Re: Oaxacan Neo-Tribal Machete

Here's a Oaxacan forged machete. Once you get out of Oaxaca City, just about everybody carries a machete. It's like carrying a pocket knife in the states.

Close up of the sisal cord wrapped handle. Sisal, is the fiber of the agave plant, which is also used for making mezcal and tequila. I saw a pair of sisal sandals made several millennia ago, and they were still in tact and looked wearable. There's some kind of cloth wrapping under the sisal--very comfortable and sure grip. Notice the smith's touchmark, too.

Rear view of the handle/pommel.

Re: Another Machete

Some great stuff, Dana! They've got an interesting way of wrapping the pommel up to the handle. Look pretty old, but it probably has more to do with their ancient forging methods.

Re: Another Machete

Thanks for posting them again Dana. That work is pretty special. I like the socket handle best of all.
