Rust Prevention

Hi everyone

This is probabley a silly question but how do you guys prevent rust on the steel piece you are engraving, while you are engraving it?

Because I'm only doing this in the evenings & weekends it takes a fair while do get the job done so there is plenty of time for rust to develop. It's obviousley caused by the acids from my fingertips and I wash my hands frequentley, particulary in the summer months.

At the moment I'm just using a light oil at the end of each session which partially works sometimes, but I was wondering if you had any better ideas.

Best regards
Andrew Biggs

I have not really had a problem with that on the actual piece I am engraving. I have had damascus blades tarnish a bit in the past.

What I do now is coat the blade with Renaissance wax before taping up the blade and it works well. I am sure that a water displacing oil like WD40 would work. RIG would probably work well too. I bought a can of that from Brownells and it has lasted for years. Just put a little on a cotton cloth and keep it in a film canister on your bench.

Andy...I believe you hae a condensation problem from your air compressor. I found that I had a slight coating of rust on gun parts in my shop. I added a water trap to the hose from my air compressor and I never had the problem again. I drain it 2x a day. Hope this will help you. Keep up the good work.

Yours truly,

Take some Damar varnish and mix it with rubbing alcohol about 10-20 % alcohol.

Wipe a thin coat on the blade and blow on it. This will leave a thin protective coating that's not sticky and won't easily rub off. What it amounts to is about the same thing as the transfer magic but not nearly as expensive so you can use it liberally.

When you're done just clean it off with alcohol, acetone, lighter fluid, whatever.

There are some that have very corrosive oils in their fingers . There are soaps available that help those people....Moisture remover for the compressor is good . dehumidifier for the room. Coat part when not working on it with things like RIG and wrap with VPI [vapour phase inhibiter ] paper. If you are only getting this on things you are working on it just may be you fingers . If all you r tools are rusting then it's the other causes.

I take months to finish a piece also. I use WD40 or BREAK FREE. The nice thing about doing Nickles, they don't RUST!

Rig is Rust Inhibiting Grease. ITs good stuff.

It reminds me of a high grade cosmolene. It makes a good lube for black powder patches too.

I have numerous firearms in long term storage 6 years and counting. They are all protected with RIG and show no signs of corrosion.( I check on them every 18 months or so) I use camelia oil on tool steel knives and have had great results with that also.

Hey Ray, thanks for that tip about RIG for a patch lube, I'm currently experimenting/testing several things for this and had never heard of Rust Inhibiting Grease.....

I can think of a half dozen things I could use that on.

Gary
(its amazing how many poeple you can find that shoot muzzle guns......)

Hey Gary

Muzzle-loaders are the only gun to shoot!!!!! Those cartridge guns will never catch on.........

Another good patch lube I use is home made mooses milk... Water with about 20% water soluable oil and a couple of drops of detergent. Keeps the bore really clean.

Cheers
Andrew

IF it shoots................................

Hey guys,

If it shoots I'm game for it. Cartridge gun, muzzle loader, cannon, bow, catapult, slingshot, etc. If it shoots its fun.
