A strange furnace I call the "star chamber"
Hi all. Been a while since I've posted here.
T-mite season is upon us, well us in the 5000 degree club.
I thought I would share a furnace design I'm making. It's one of a kind, hybrid that utilizes the firece, but fleeting heat of thermite and the traditional charcoal/forced air pit. With some special modifications added by me. All the elements have been tested and work, so hopefully I can put them together for a bitchin' furnace design.
It will be used for making t-mite steel, either alloy or plain. Also I will use it for some crystal growing experiments I'm going to do.
It's made from a 55 gal drum with 25% cut off. 4 tuyeres, with pure oxygen injection when I need SERIOUS heat BTW, I have tried that and it works like a charm.
Wood ash and charcoal will be the primary insulation. The inner most chamber will be magnesium oxide. Hopefully I can make a "parabolic" effect with the wlls to reflect heat back towards the crucible.
The t-mite crucible will be removable, with an insulated "dummy" for when pre heating and conventional furnace use. I'll have an igloo on top, with vents on the sides to help keep in heat.
here is a chicken scratch sketch I wooped out @ lunch time. I call it my "star chamber". Seems a lot more accurate than the secret court I borrowed it from Tell me what you think.
