What knives to make

Hello all,

Working on my first bowie (and stick tang) and was thinking about other knives that I need to do to to broaden skills.

I've done Loveless NY Special, Loveless drop point, a lock back interframe (under supervision), a liner lock (under supervision), and a straight razor (under supervision).

As said I'm working on a bowie currently. What other "must do" style would you say everyone should do to learn?

Jim

Keep them coming guys.

Only the simplest of quillons, if any at all. I think the more important part for general learning - which is what you asked for - is simply the thin double edged blade. Many of these are made for modern military use and as such wouldn't have much of a guard (think Fairbain). So, I say whether you choose to do it as a period piece or as a modern tool being able to handle that double grind is the common hurdle that must me mastered ....

Traditional puukko with a rhombiod blade and no guard-plate... to be so simple they are trickier than they look. http://img193.imageshack.us/img193/4220/img2516t.jpg

And a kukri, of course. The world needs more falcatas, IMO. Quillion daggers are challenging, but try a jambiya sometime....

When I first started making knives I wanted to try every conceivable method and style, 20 years later I have only just scratched the surface.

Just teasing Ray. I have thought about doing a quillon but mostly because I hang in the Ren Faire but it is far down the line on working. There is a reason it is part of the MS test.

I have done a couple dagger grinds and the bowie I'm working on is a saber grind and oh yeah they are a whole new trick on the grinding.

I've looked into Scandies and do find them interesting. Definitely adding them to the list.

Granted the list isn't just for me, I'm sure there are a couple people who may want to stretch their skills out of the comfort zone but I do want ideas of what I should be trying to get better.

Thanks,
Jim

So help me out here, what constitutes a "Scandie" grind/knife?

Scandinavian knives such as the above pukko but there are several types. If I understand it one defining characteristic is no secondary bevel.

They, like any other knife can be, can be amazing works of art. The stacked handles can be amazing.

my favorite has always been the lovless semi skinner.
If you want a challenge, then you need to try a 14" double ground sub-hilt fighter with rear boulsters.
that is like making 4 knives in one, so you would need to like punishment lol
