Convex edge Plunge line...HOW!!!?
You guys ever seen those awesome crisp plunge lines on convex ground knives, like say on Bark River jobbies?
I just started trying my hand at grinding with my fancy new KMG-1, but getting anything remotely resembling a plunge line is difficult enough ...making it deep and crisp and even ( I heard that in a song once) is proving to be imporssible. I have a short time to overcome this steep learning curve, as I have a few shows to attend coming up....talk about jumping the gun. So then....what Ideas? Whos' actually done this right? |

I tend to start my grinds on a flat platen just to establish the plunge cut and bevels, about 1/3 of the height I want...then I go to the rotary platen, using very light pressure.

Bring it in on Tuesday night Andrew and we will work on it with a little scrap first then you can grind your own knives if you have them blanked out.

Yessir. I ordered 22 feet of steel, and 10 new 50 grit grinding belts today.
Thanks George. |

Use a file guide while grinding to line up everything and let the j-flex belt run a little off the edge of the platen.

Try to split the convex edge to discrete flat "steps" and then smooth it in one curve. I've seen it in a video. Grind the steps accurately, the guy on the video make 3 steps, it was enough. Than handle it on flat abrasive surface. And final hone it on soft surface.
