Knife vise vs. Panavise

Guys,

did anyone tried to use panavise to hand finsh blades? I know people use panavise to work on handles. Can panavise also handle heavy load of hand finishing blade or I better go for a real knife vise?

Thanks,
Alex

I've used two panavises for 20+ years. A couple of years ago, I bought a Moran-style blade vise. Panavises are nice.....

To finish blades, you will have as good or better luck with a board and two c-clamps. Clamp blade to board at tang. Clamp board to table, bench, etc. Gives the blade better support whilst handsanding.

I have a Panavise, but for handles and blades nothing beats a well-made purpose-built knife vise. There are some nice designs floating around the net. I pulled some ideas from some pics and built my own in an afternoon. Very satisfying! Good luck!

Modified Shaving Horse for Blade Vise

I built a crude but effective hand finishing device based on the old carpenter tool the "shaving horse" - woodworkers used to use to clamp wood staves in place to shave down into spokes for wooden wheels. You sit on the bench part, operate the clamp with your feet to hold the blade directly in front of you. Find it gives me a lot more leverage in that position than bench height. Repositioning just takes a second since the clamp is foot operated.

Nat.
