stabilzed wood question

Hey everyone I purchased a turning blank of maple burl and ripped it down into scales. I am planning on sending them off to WSSI to get stabilized, was curious if there is anything I need to do before I send them off, and also if there are more places that do stabilization?

Thanks a lot for the help, Alex

Yes, first and foremost don't cut the scales until after the stabilization is done. The stabilizing process usually warps even a big block of wood, thin pieces for sure.

K&G Finishing in Lakeside, AZ is where I send mine.

Write your name on each piece ....

Also make sure it's dry, less than 8% moisture content. Most turning blanks are still a little wet.
Also the more you send the cheaper it gets.So I usually try to get a med. flat rate box full to send off tio get over the 10 lb mark.
Both K&G a Wssi are good to deal with.
Stan

I think Ray means not to finish the scales in any way before sending them. Rough sawn pieces should be OK.

I am looking to stabilize my own wood blank and scales. Is the phone number listed an open invite for anyone to call?

Anyone used Cactus Juice to stabilize wood? The process looks straight forward and easy to complete. Here is the link http://www.turntex.com/index.php?opt...art&Itemid=121

Several people have experimented with stabilizing wood for themselves on a small scale and none that I know of have found it to be economically viable. The equipment needed is too costly and you won't recover the cost for just what you will need for yourself.

Doug, the most expensive part of stabilizing is the vacuum pumps we use, there are pumps out there that cost 600.00 and will pull 29.5" of vacuum and there are pumps out there that will cost you 20.00 and pull 29.9" of vacuum, it?s all in what you buy, the chambers out there can get costly but they can be made for as little as 25.00 and they work very well, one gallon of stabilizing resin will run about 75.00 and will do many knife scales, I know what you are saying about people experimented with stabilizing! and yes I was one of them at one time and after trying many types of resins and having chemical company?s change properties of resins stabilizing has become very simple and very reasonable for small scale stabilizers to do their own, I have customers in Canada and Europe that have contacted me about chambers and resins due to the fact that to ship wood into the states to get stabilized was very expensive, many of them bought resin and chambers and are now doing their own with great results. If any of you are looking to stabilize PM me, I have chambers, bulk resins, color.

Jon
