grinding a distal taper ?

How do you grind a distal taper? I can think of two methods, first to grind a taper in before grinding the bevels or to use the grinding of the bevels to create the distal taper. Which method is prefered? or is there a better method all together.
Thanks
Steve

IF you flat grind a blade from top to bottom you get a natural distal taper from were your blade gets narrower from the edge to the spine.

Hi Steve, mine is created while grinding. You can get a pretty dramatic one with thick stock and a contact wheel.

I'm doing flat and convex grinds, and form the distal taper while grinding the bevels.

Steve are you talking about a taper in the blade or tang? For somereason when I read your post I was thinking you were talking about a taper in the tang. But after reading the posts I am no longer sure.

I was asking about the taper i.n the blade. The knife I am making would, I think look better if it had more of a pronounce taper to the blade so was just wondering how to go about it on the next one I make. Right now with the tang tapered the knife actually looks front heavy so my thought was to make a more dramatic taper in the blade to offset that.

Steve-
I don't know what type of blade you're making, but how about a slight false edge on top? It can really skinny up the look.

Steve, when I grind in a distal taper on a flat ground bowie or fighter, I roll the blade. Starting at the plunge and moving toward the point I roll it so that I'm taking more off at the top of the grind. It take some practice but it can be done.

This is another good reason to learn how to freehand grind instead of using a !@&$%T jig!

David

I do the same thing David does. Just a slight twist as you draw the blade across the contact wheel. I can show you while you are at the Wolverine show in a few weeks.

Don
Thanks for the invite, unfortunately I needed to make a choice between Novi and Blade. I hope I will see you in Atlanta? Maybe we can discuss it there.
Thanks
Steve

Steve, I will be both places (as well as the Wiscnosin Badger show this weekend), so we can talk about it at your convenience.
