You'd probably have to look at a Porta-Band which is a portable bandsaw. They are made under many brand names. Use the Search button to find some of the threads where we have discussed them in the past because some are better than others.
However, I'm not sure about the variable speed part though. To cut 1/4" steel takes pretty good power and small variable speed devices usually don't have much strength at low speeds ..... |

The top end Dewalt porta-band is a variable speed model....and also has a nifty built in work light. Once I burn up the Milwaukee porta-band that I have now, I'll be getting the Dewalt saw.
Your likely not going to find a suitable stand to mount it on for bench use...all of the commercially available stands for porta-bands have been way cheesy and flimsy. Building your own stand isn't difficult, and solidly mounted, these little saw out cut any metal cutting bandsaw unless you can chunk down several thousand dollars of one of the large industrial models. __________________ WWW.CAFFREYKNIVES.NET Caffreyknives@gmail.com "Every CHOICE has a CONSEQUENCE, and all your CONSEQUENCES are a result of your CHOICES." |

Since I have to have a band saw that's portable I would be interested if anyone has a good design for adapting a porta-band into a bench machine.
I'm surprized that the Milwaukee didn't stand up. Usually they are top quality tools. When shopping one thing to consider is DeWalt tools are identical to Black & Decker Industrial tools, being made on the same assembly line. The only difference being the color of the plastic case. I learned this accidentally from a Black & Decker rep. when buying a drill. Gary |
