Latest "Topo-Gigio" Mini-Butterfly Knife

Finally got this one done....

Blade is carved from a wonderful, and quite unique, piece of Eggerling damascus. My photo skills can't begin to capture how great the highly polished steel looks in person. I came up with the new symbol to carve into the blade while looking for something that was ancient Greek, to better go with the elephant ivory "columns" (that I spend so much time carving).

This was also my first time to use inlaid rubies in the stop pins (open position only), instead of my usual sapphires. I'm really happy with the way they worked out....especially against the vivid teal blue liners and white ivory.

Overall length 3 7/8" (open), 2 1/2" (closed).

Sorry my photos aren't better. The knife is leaving here tomorrow by Fed-X to the customer's home, so I shot the pics on the fly...but you'll get the idea.

For starters here's the finished blade by itself:

Thanks for looking,

Dennis Greenbaum

That is the coolest mini-balli I have ever seen. And you are right that is a beautiful piece of Damascus. Excellent, excellent job.

Hi Dennis,

You hardly need to apoligize for those crystal clear photos. They show a stunning bali in perfect detail.

I am really pleased for you. I hope this one has feelers out for a home. These have been very elegant, and THIS one tops the cake!

Thanks for the post.

Coop

Thanks Coop. I guess that I subconsciously think about your level of photography and assume that mine's only fair at best.

As far as my finding a customer for the knife... Happily each of my Topo Gigio's has either been sold in advance or sold within the first 1/2 hr of them being available. I already had a couple of buyers (along with a certain New York knife dealer as well), lined up in advance for this one:

"The knife is leaving here tomorrow by Fed-X to the customer's home, so I shot the pics on the fly..."

Now I'm on a roll...I've already started #5...and I'm planning on a full-sized version as well.

Dennis

Thanks for asking. Your wish is my command...

Here's #1. As you can see I've come a long way (including my photography skills).

Here's #2. Shot by Coop (what a difference!).

And #3. Shot by me...and Point Seven

And you've already seen #4.

Thanks!

Dennis

The lessons are coming along nicely, Dennis!

Seriously, the whole series is fantastic! Thanks for sharing the pics with us!

Now that you've posted a couple times this month, I hope you'll continue to keep posting! You've been pretty quiet for awhile.

Thanks Denis! That was quite a sight.

Just a little story (off topic)

When I was a kid my grand-uncle used to play with me with a topo-gigio doll. The italian mouse character has been on my mind since then. Recently (15 years after he passed away) I went to my grand-aunt's place and spent some tipe digging for stuff in his long forgotten boxes and I found that little doll. And I also got a brand new one for my kids, that will be born in mid april.

Thanks guys...

What are you using to carve?
For the fine detail work it's a combination of my GRS high speed (320,000 rpm's) "Ultra 850" rotary carver, using 1/16" friction burs...along with a whole lot of hand work using various small-scale carving/scratching/sanding/polishing tools. For heavier removal (such as grinding Topo Gigio blades), using 3/32 and 1/8 burs, after five years my "Professional" model #398 Dremel is still goin' strong (I use it with the flex shaft). New brushes every year or two and it's fine.

But beginning next week that's all about to change... For the past couple of years I've been hearing nothing but praises for micromotor handpieces, so I finally broke down and ordered one (Ray Cover, David Broadwell, and my close friend Kelly Carlson have nothing but great things to say about them). Those guys all use Chinese versions...but Foredom has dropped their price dramatically and their latest model, #1070, can now be had for under $400,...That's for the entire kit (just a couple of years ago their comparable model was $800). With collets and adapters I'll be able to use 1/8, 3/32, and 1/16 burs. I'm told there's very little vibration, considerable control, and much lower decibels (my ears are always ringing after 2 or 3 hours of continuous use of my Dremel).

I ordered my Foredom micromotor through my local jewelry supply store. Here's one of several online retailers that carry them (FYI- The Ram Power 45 they show is also a decent alternative...But I figured I can't go wrong with Foredom): http://www.qualitycarvingsupplies.com/store/page53.html

I can't wait to try it out...and it's coming just in time. I've already started Topo Gigio #5. ;-)
