Anacid ink and etching advise.

Hey guys

I'm only new but have done a little poking around and found an old post about anacid ink used for etching.

I'm from Australia and have checked around local suppliers and they have never heard such a thing. Does anyone know any info on making such ink or an equivalent? If so any ideas on finding a place I could acquire it or make.

I've also started attempting etching on a couple pieces of mild steal. Usual hydrochloric acid and nail polish with limited sucsess. I've read hydrochloric doesn't etc mild steal very well and my attempts prove this theory but it's easy to get. Should I bite the bullet and order ferric chloride or nirtic acid? If not does anyone have any idea on ratios I've been told 70% hrydo 30% water?

Any advise would greatfuly appreciated

Circuit board etchant at Radio Shack (or your Aussie equivalent) is ferric chloride. A couple of bucks for a bottle.
However, you guys have some silly laws down under, so who knows?

Yeh we sure do. Apparently everybody uses acids to make drugs and bombs so now it's a little tricky to get it. But thanks to the internet there are ways around it.

Hey Andy had a go with the sharpie it worked ok I used ammonium persulphate apprently it's an equivalent of ferric Chloride. Do you remove the piece and re applie the sharpe I'll try upload an image so you can see but it etched into the sharpie I keep an eye on it but it etched threw the sharpe in some spots

It's of paramount importance that the Sharpie be new. A new Sharpie lays down a thick coat of ink on polished steel and it doesn't leach along fine grind scratches the way it would on say a handsanded blade. Andy thin spots in the Sharpie ink should be addressed before etching.

I don't know what ammonium persulphate is, so I cant speak intelligently about its suitability for this procedure, but I'm glad that you enjoyed at least some success with it. With appropriate adjustments, to your technique, perhaps this will be a viable process for you.

Additionally, I never etched very long. My covered steel was still mirror polished when I removed the sharpie ink. A longer etch would almost certainly have some spots where the etchant finds its way through the ink at various time intervals which would lead to an non-uniform finish.
