Paul Savage, Jim Small engraved hunter.....

Paul did a wonder job on this knife and gave me plenty of room to play.
I don't do very many animals on knives so the challenge was to place the heads in just the right area to show them off and leave enough room for some scroll work. I didn't want to try to frame the heads in the traditional way mostly because of the finger notch. My only option was to either place them forward or to the back of the bolster and engrave them large enough to give some detail. Anyway, the photos below are the final result.
Any questions....ask.
Jim

I like how you chose to handle the panels on this knife Jim.
Good contrast on the game animals too.
I think this is the first bulino-type work I've seen of yours...Very cool!

Tim

Friend Jim:
I like this knife's engraving. The combination of classical adornment and an animal, she proves to be very beautiful.
This engraving demonstrates us than the possibility to combine floral motives, vegetables, animals, etc..... When he makes off with esthetic taste, end up in an engraving of quality.
A greeting and thanks to show.
Antonio

Amigo Jim :

Tim, thanks for the comments. Like I said...I don't do many animals simply because I don't get requests for them. I like to do them....and as you know they take allot of time. I have done most of the animals on firearms and really haven't taken the time to post them, sorry.
Thanks John for your comments....I suppose that if Paul had not cut the finger notch in the bolster I could have centered the animals. Given the space requirements on Pauls beautiful knife....I think you are right...it turned out nice. Note: Pauls' knife is beautifully finished and well constructed....the fit and finish are perfect.
Antonio....any comment coming from you is wonderful compliment and I really appreciate it. We sure would like to see more of your work.
Thanks
Jim

Really nice Jim! I like the way you choose to lay out the design. It works well.

Jim I can hardly wait to see it in the flesh. I have it up on my desktop background. Once again, thanks for working with me on this piece. I'll give a call when it shows up here.

I have to agree with what has been said, I like the frame area the way that you did it.

hi Jim .. as always a beautiful job and I probably would have done the same location as you did , the only thing I like to do is place the figure over the scroll , make it look as though the figure is coming out of the scroll , but any way you did great and lets see more .. ron p

That's really sweet Jim! I've been scared to try any animals yet. I need to at least play on some scraps. You did an awesome job here. Dwayne

Hi Jim , I've had alot of great feedback on this piece. I keep telling myself to keep this one for myself. Friday night I had it out to" show and tell" with a bunch of better off hunting buddies and one of their wives decided she wants a set of steak knives and is real hot on the scroll engraving to be included, so I'll keep you posted on that progress and see where it goes. Hi Jim,

It looks like you did not blacken the back ground. is that correct? I really like the grey tones. i think it blends with the knife much better. With wood and steel, I think leaving out the black can work very well. other times, the black look works better, esp. with white or black handle scales, or other high contrast materials.

I guess I'm trying to say that it seems that the high contrast of the black background doesn't have to be the "standard" option.

great composition, and very nice work!

take care,

Tom
