Hotdog,
Try this by Jens: http://ckdforums.com/showthread.php?...kydex+tutorial It's the best one I've ever seen and doesn't require a whole lot of special tools. Now if you don't mind investing in these special tools knifekits.com carries all the goodies you could wish for. Jim My pardon, it's the one at the top of the forum. Hotdog,
The tutoral mentioned below is great! I just went through the whole kydex set up process . I bought the rivet press with dies from knifekits.com and made my own press. It is simple to make a press that will work great for knife sheaths, I have already made six since two weeks ago. All you need is two pieces of plywood about 10x10 some foam and a $2 pair of hinges from the hardware store. Took about 20 mins to build and works perfectly. I also got a heat gun for $26, that's all. It is super easy to use , the band saw cuts it like butter and the edges polish up great on the grinder. Kydex is just what I needed, professional looking sheaths instantly. My leather work is not up to par yet so this is a great way for me to sell some knives while I perfect the leather techniques. I'll try to post a pic of my press later, my photo host is down. see ya Mike |

My first post here, BTW the amount of knowledge and info here is just amazing, but I wouldn't have expected less with so many talented makers here.
Mike, what kind of foam did you use and does the type of foam matter? __________________ Pat If you can read this, thank a teacher....and since it's in English, thank a soldier. |

The foam I used was just some 1/2" black stuff. I think something thicker would be better for making holsters and magizine pouches and those sort of things, but the 1/2" stuff has been working fine for my knives.
The best would probably be if I could double up on the 1/2" stuff to allow larger/thicker objects to be wrapped in the press. I think I will probably build another press with the foam doubled up. The way it is now it closes snug with nothing in it , and real tight with a knife in it so all is well and the foam hasn't melted yet so that's good too. the welding rod in the front just pulls out and the press can be opened, then once you put your knife in and press the top down the rod can be slipped in and locks it shut, very high tech. Like I said it cost me $2 for hinges and the rest was scrounged in my shop, I really couldn't see spending $80 for one. see ya Mike |

Thanks Mike. Do any of you know where to pick up some the black foam?

I bought some foam that looks very similar from Texas Knife Supply for @ $12 or so. I'm sure it can be had for cheaper, but I was ordering other stuff and decided to throw it in the cart.
