New skinner...
Just thought I'd post a couple of pics of the new skinning knife I'm doing... My scanner is a pile of crap, but at least you can see the "jist" of the project... Dave

I like the blade design....should do a fine job. Is that a Oak handle? personaly I like oak for a knife handle. no filler and natural maybe a lil honey colored stain. always wondered why its not used more often. I found a piece of oak bout 8" long and 2" wide( think it was ment for shimming) It had a interesting wavy grain pattern.I lightly stained it and applied about 8 coats of polyurathane, no filler the uneveness of the stain brought the grain pattern out. Paid less then a dollar for it. I put it on a file knife. The Oak and brass bolsters compleminted each other very well.

No... You can't tell it from the picture, but it's actually cedar... I had used some in the interior of my 23 foot sloop, and had this five foot board left over... I found two sections in it that had the grain I was looking for so decided against advice to try it...

i don't know why they would advise against using cedar.......caouse you won't have any problems with moths chewin up the handle. a 23' sloop? I always wanted to sail round the world, can I borrow it.......i'll let you use my 8' prarie scooner. youd have to find a way for locomotion cause I plan on takin the lil woman with me.

The thing I couldn't resist was that grain pattern... Look how it compliments the shape of the blade... Incidentally, that shape is not my first choice in skinner styles, but one of my grandsons prefers that kind...

Pretty knife. Like how curves of blade blend into curves of handle. Also like the functional handle with the index finger groove on handle and then the curved ricasso for choked grip?
I've thought about using cedar before. Bet the red heartwood would make beautiful handle. Question: How did you make, or where did you get the blade? Also, is that bluing? It looks almost black in the pict. Nat. __________________ N. Bassett
