2x27 Grizzly sander

I would like to know if a 2x27 grizzly sander would be better than a Harbor freight 1x30 sander? I know a 2x72 would be the best, but I only do knife making as a hobby, so there is no income yet to fund better tools. At $125.00 and having a 2" belt would you get one?

no contest!!

get the grizzly 2x72.

I know many who use one, and have used one myself. its a decent machine. as a hobbyist you should be able finance the rest of your shop from the knives made with it.

Go for it, but shop around.

The only issue will be the selection of belts for 2x27. If you can find a sears 2x42 with 6" disc that would be better I only have a 1x42 with 8" disc delta, but I bought it years ago and it is very well made. Those 1x42 with 8" disc machines are going for over 200 bux right now. The Sears 2x42 also can use the 1x42 belts and I have micron belts in that size which you won't find for the Grizzly or the 2x42 either. Look for a used 2x48 if you can find one.

But don't despair the first knife I ever ground out was an old file and I used a 3x18 portable belt sander I clamped to the table. It worked very well until I burned it up, but it was a cheap $25 model anyway, but it lasted for a summer. For $125 you might check out the 4x36 belt sanders with 6" disc. They sell them at Lowes or Home Depot. If you can find a sander with an 8" disc get that it has a lot more sanding area than the 6". Shop around, for $125 you should be able to do better than the Grizzly in that oddball size.

I should have told you guys what I have in my shop for tools. I have a 1x30, a 1x42 with 8" disk, a 4x36 with a 6"disk, a 3x21 that I clamp to a table, an 8" bench grinder, 2 6" grinders, a bench grinder converted to a buffing station, and 3 dermal tools, 3 4" hand held grinders with different disks for each one, a hand held/ made stationary band saw, and a metal band saw, and a knife sharp sharpener that sucks, and 2 homemade forges, 1 gas, and 1 wood. Also I use a scroll saw for trimming my handles, and a drill press. I do have a table saw, planer, jointer, and a band saw. Just trying to do my grinds faster. Thank you

you've already got an assortment of small grinders ad sanders. adding another to the collection will not help you out that much.
hold on to the pennies a bit longer and get the right tool youll need.

often you can find these used for sale. just keep looking around.

You're doing better than I am.

I would love to have a bandsaw that can cut steel not to mention the 4x36 belt sander for handles. If you have $125 save up for a 2x48 if you can. I'll have to get my ex to take pro-grade pics of my knives. I mostly finish by hand anywho. Don't waste your time with the 2x27 Grizzly, you have better already. If I can grind a 9" Bowie with my 1x42 and 8"disc you can make some awesome knives already with your 4x36 sander.

Let me get this straight

You are talking about the 2x 27 grizzly combo grinder right? Because they make a 2x72 grizzly combo sander/buffer/grinding wheel as Damon linked to Amazon above. The 2x27 is $165 and the 2x72 is $584 plus shipping. If I may suggest a machine?
Get the Kalamazoo 2x48 sander which is rated five stars on Amazon and is my next purchase when I finish a set of kitchen knives for a pretty penny. It is $448 plus 42.65 shipping. I am feeling like a kid on Christmas morning at the thought of getting the Kalamazoo. We had them where I used to work same size and I have no complaints. You may have to build a bigger grinding work table for it as it is an industrial American made machine and the table it has is only about 2x4 if my memory serves me right. If you free hand grind your knives then it's no problem. It tilts flat and has a 5" contact wheel. The 2x48 belts are available in just about any configuration you want and are fairly inexpensive to boot. We had one at work that they had mounted to a table and they built a big 12" work table and mounted it to the table in front of it.

Yea I was looking at the 2x27, I would have to find some buyers to justify a $500.00 sander. I do like the looks of the Kalamazoo, I am going to have to wait for a while, I have spent to muck this last few months , but I am not complaining the wife and kids got me a dewalt tool chest for Christmas, and I was told that it was for Christmas, fathers day, birthday, and anything else they could come up with for the next year.

OK, gotcha. I heard about the wife and stuff. I used to be married and I used to stay after work and grind knives there. But then I would get the leftover pieces of D2. I wouldn't even consider the Grizzly with what you already have. Save and get that Kalamazoo. I used them and it is the next thing on my agenda. I have a rich uncle and he wants a set of kitchen knives he can hand down to his grandchildren, plus a knife holder and a couple of sheaths. I do pretty good leather.

Are you able to lay your 4x36 belt flat? If you can it is easier to grind larger knives with the belt moving away from you on something like that. If you ever have seen a picture of the old knife makers with their 6 foot grinding wheels they always ground with the wheel turning away from them holding the edge of the knife pointing into the wheel like you would with a belt sander edge up. It also kept the dripping water from going in their faces and laps.LOL Had a guy show me that back in the 70s, it's easier to freehand grind that way.

The 4x36 is just a bench sander, and yes the belt table lays flat. I always run it away from me, and most of the time I wear a leather welding apron. I like the added protection.
