Depends on the particular VFD. I would highly encourage getting/using a KBAC 27D VFD/Controller, and go with a motor that works with it. Often times individuals get fixated on a given motor, and don't pay enough attention to what VFD/controller they will use. Decide on the VFD/Controller FIRST, then get the appropriate motor.

The priority should be to use the components that "match", versus how convenient they are to acquire.

You can use whatever you can get running but a 3 ph motor running on single phase power always loses about a third of its power. If I read your specs correctly your motor is only one hp to begin with. One reason we bother with 3ph in the first place is that we can get more powerful motors very cheaply. I'd suggest you look for a 3hp 3ph motor if you want to use VFD. They can often be found as surplus in new or like new condition for $20 or $30 dollars. Of course, if you have to ship it - like an eBay purchase - the shipping can be pricey due to the weight ...

Although we all want to get by as inexpensively as possible, be careful of your mindset when it come something as important as a Motor and Controller for your grinder...... I've spent endless hours trying to help folks who's first thought was "cost savings" when it came to a motor and/or controller.... only to experience all kinds of issues.

For a 3 hp setup for a grinder, I recommend:

and:

http://www.electricmotorwholesale.com/LEESON-116107/

NOTE: The above motor is the mount type that works with my grinders..... MAKE SURE YOU PURCHASE THE CORRECT MOUNT TYPE MOTOR FOR YOU MACHINE.

SMT.....random sites are either trying to sell you something OR its someone praising what ever product they use (don't we all want to think OUR way is the BEST way?) Ray and Ed's advice is true they aren't trying to sell you anything and both of them have a TON of experience
