Question KMG replica questions

I asked Rob from beaumontmetalworks.com about shipping abroad and he said he doesnt, o i'm trying to build my own

i have couple of questions, mainly for the wheels,
i will be using 2HP motor, probably 3 phase, with 2"x72" belts, what do u think would be best drive wheel size for that ? (i will mill the wheels since its probably cheaper and didnt even find someone who would be willing to export)

should i crown just the drive or tracking wheel or both?

are there any easy to acquire replacements ?

any help would be appreciated
PS: I live in Egypt

Drive wheels are generally 4" in diameter or less. The idler is the only crowned wheel on a grinder ....

now i'm sorta confused, because one said the drive wheel should be crowned only, and the KMG has BOTH crowned

can you please explain bit more about the effect of crown in the tracking wheel ? is it related the tracking adjustment?

thanks

The crowning is related to the tracking. A grinder with no crowned wheels probably won't track worth a darn. Most grinders have only the tracking wheel crowned. I can't see where having the drive wheel crowned would hurt anything - and apparently it doesn't because Rob does it that way - but most grinders don't crown that wheel.........

Since you can choose your drive wheel size, decide what belt speed you want and how fast the wheel will be turning, and pick a wheel size from that.

Drive wheel diameter in inches = 12 * (Belt speed in feet per minute) / (Drive wheel revolutions per minute)

You might be changing the wheel speed with either pulley or a variable speed drive or both, so use the maximum wheel speed and maximum desired belt speed for this calculation. I like a top belt speed of around 3600 fpm, which goes well with a 4" wheel turning at 3600 rpm.

Of course, it could also be that I like that because that's what I've always had, but when I had the chance to try grinders that ran faster I didn't really enjoy making my mistakes so much faster.

Just a correction on the math.

SFPM = (circumference of drive wheel in inches)/12 * RPM
or
SFPM = (circumference of drive wheel in feet) * RPM

Circumference is:
C = pi*r^2

Which is why a 4" wheel works so well for your speed, since a 4" wheel has a circumference of about 12.57". That works out to about 3770 SFPM.

Locate the center of your idler wheel and wrap two or three layers of black electric tape around the idler wheel. Should improve your tracking by a good amount. I had to do that to mine and I have very precise tracking now.

JUST took a look at both my KMG and my TW-90 so as far as the KMG is concerned the ONLY crowed wheel is the DRIVE wheel ……….as far as my TW-90 now this grinder differently from the kmg there is a plate that moves drive wheel back and forth essentially making the drive wheel also the tracking wheel but that drive/track wheel had no crown its the wheel up top (the one that would be the tracking on the kmg) that wheel is the one that is crowned......I have never altered these machines all the wheels are the way they came and even tho it seems confusing it works I have had the tw90 for a year and kmg for maybe 3-4 years both run great
