Exclamation Basement knife shop!

Alright, so I just recently decided to start making knives, the only problem is I live in a apartment in this city , I have no backyard to build a shed all I have is the basement. I'm wondering if it is safe to set up shop down here?

There is a heater and boiler down here that runs thru the whole house,

And my newborn son is here!

He's my main concern, is it safe with all the metal / wood dust flying around? Will it make its way up stairs?

Iv looks up dust collectors but don't have funds for that!
Help! Will my family be safe if I set up shop down here!

Any feedback or questions are greatly appreciated!

I would not recommend it in the basement. You would not believe the amount of dust and particles floating around. It definitely would be a hazard for your newborn.

Where is your fresh air/return for you heater/AC? If in basement it will pull all that dust into the rest of the residence...not good. If you plan to use a grinder and other dust making power tools this is an issue. If you are just using hand tools you don't have much to worry about.
Otherwise, plan on your first major purchase being a dust collector/air cleaner unit. A shop confined to an enclosed basement is not only bad for you but for entire family. Think things over carefully.
Another option would be to rent time in an open shop somewhere nearby.

You only get your health one time.

Hi, I have also started out in my basement with no tools/money etc. and air quality is priority number one!
You might try craigslist or local auctions for a deal on a used dust collector and don't be discouraged if you don't have money to lay out for all the latest tools and such. I've seen guys do first rate work with just the simplest of hand tools
Best Luck
