Who's going to Chicago?
Hope to see a lot of forum participants in Chicago the next month, September 8 and 9, Friday and Saturday. Should be a great show.

Great Coop! See you there. Guess you'll be shooting pics? I'll have one or two, I hope, for you to do your magic on.
Man, I'd love to see the King Tut exhibition, but am afraid I won't be there long enough, have to get back home quick. __________________ http://www.srjknives.com NRA Endowment Member Knifemakers' Guild Member since 1971 "May you live all the days of your life." - Jonathan Swift |

I'll be there, with 3 knives from Antonio Montejano on the table. They are a sight to see!

Good Grief, Don! I may not sleep tonight! After looking at his work, see link below, I just might be willing to WALK to Chicago just to see them in the flesh. WOW!! I cannot believe the talent one can find in the knife business!

We'll be doing a little seminar at the Chicago Show. Any suggestions on exactly what ought to be covered?
Thinking about talking about grinding, polishing, assembly, soldering...... Any suggestions? (Of course, topics that I might know something about would be best!) __________________ http://www.srjknives.com NRA Endowment Member Knifemakers' Guild Member since 1971 "May you live all the days of your life." - Jonathan Swift |

Steve, all of the above would be great, but if you have to narrow it down then I would love to hear you speak on double grinds and finishing techniques you use. Another area might be the use of some of the trickier exotic handle materials like mammoth ivory or big horn sheep. That stuff seems to want to take on the shape of a potato chip rather than stay flat. Ending up with the right surface finish without disturbing too much of the natural character is a challenge as well.
Do you know when and where your demo will be? Thanks, Thad |

Good ideas to discuss Thad. I appreciate your input. The horns can certainly give one fits, can't they? They need to be
stabilized one way or another. Cutting is a trick, too, if you are cutting up your own sets. I'm awaiting word on the time/day and location of the seminar,. Will post here as soon as I am advised __________________ http://www.srjknives.com NRA Endowment Member Knifemakers' Guild Member since 1971 "May you live all the days of your life." - Jonathan Swift Last edited by Steve; 09-04-2006 at 10:13 AM. |

I'm looking forward to it. There is always so much to learn and I guess that's why knife making is so much fun.

Never ending, it seems, Thad. Buster was still learning when he passed away, that tells us we all still have a long way to go!
Here's the scoop from Cathy Wormser regarding the seminar: [QOUTW] "Hi Steve; Your seminar is scheduled at 1 p.m. on Saturday, 9/9. It will be held in the "Headquarters room", right around the corner from the Arlington Ballroom, which is the exhibition hall. Please tell your people that I will direct them to the various areas when they arrive. Also, let them know that they can find more information on our website (www.chicagocustomknifeshow.com). Best regards, Cathy" __________________ http://www.srjknives.com NRA Endowment Member Knifemakers' Guild Member since 1971 "May you live all the days of your life." - Jonathan Swift Last edited by Steve; 09-04-2006 at 01:07 PM. |

It was a great show with great hosts and Chicago is, after one short visit, "My kind of town." Lots of things to do, lots of history, weather was "Perfect." Lots of fun seeing Ron and
Donna Lake again, Bob Lum, Thad Buchanan and all the great folks that were there, wish I could name them all....... Two days, Fri. and Sat. is the way to go! __________________ http://www.srjknives.com NRA Endowment Member Knifemakers' Guild Member since 1971 "May you live all the days of your life." - Jonathan Swift Last edited by Steve; 09-12-2006 at 09:26 PM. |

It was a fun show. It seemed more intimate than most of the shows I've experienced and well organized. I enjoyed meeting you, Steve and enjoyed your seminar as well. It was also nice to meet some of the people who are active on the forums and make it possible to put a face to a name.

Speaking of the Seminar - for anyone who happened to attend:
What are your thoughts? Were the photos of any use? What did we leave out? What should be left out, or added, in the future, should it happen again? Would a Power Point set-up help? I would like to make it worthwhile. Please feel free to add input, pro or con, so that we can tune things up. I'd appreciate a critique. __________________ http://www.srjknives.com NRA Endowment Member Knifemakers' Guild Member since 1971 "May you live all the days of your life." - Jonathan Swift Last edited by Steve; 09-19-2006 at 03:04 PM. |

Personally, I liked the looser structure as you presented it. It was more free flowing than a power point presentation. Sometimes those things create an atmosphere where people don't want to interupt and it turns into a canned presentation. The way you did it created a dialog and that was where some of the best information rose to the surface for me. I would say just walk in the room, talk about some of the aspects of making knives and let it go where the conversation leads it. I think the photos were an asset and should remain a part of the presentation. I also appreciated the opportunity to have input via this forum before hand.
