W Damascus layers??

I have been thinking about making some W pattern Damascus. I am wondering though, how many times the billet should be doubled over (minimum) to achieve a desirable pattern? I plan on starting with 15 layers of 1" wide 1084 nan 15N20.

Thanks
Brian

"W" layer count....

Brian,

Keep the layer count fairly low for "W" patterns........less than 50 for a courser pattern, and not more than 100 for a fine pattern. Once you get past 100 layers with "W" pattern, it gets so fine that the finished product almost looks blurry.

Thanks Ed. Low layer count is great news as I am still pounding my billets with only a hammer.
