Why cut the border before stamping?

Could someone enlighten me on this? If the border of a pattern is to be stamped, what does cutting the border and bevelling do to the leather prior to stamping?

Thanks for the info

Brett

Gives better definition along the border and looks "cleaner". Don't have to, but results will be different depending on tooling and stamp designs. Try it both ways and chose for yourself. You'll figure out which way works best for you in short order.
