Etching steel
What steels can you do a deep etch in? I was going to use ferric chloric. Can you do stainless steels like 304, or 416?

I only have ferric chloric. If no one responds I will probably just do some tests.

So what did you end up doing? When I want to etch something I usually use some 5 percent vinegar mixed with a pinch of salt and then electroetch it. That way I don't have to worry about chemicals or clean up, its just salty vinegar.

Hi Dave R.
Do us a favor and fill out a bit more of your profile so we know where you are, there might be a knife maker in your area who can lend a hand. Now I'm a bit hesitant to post my phone number on the internet, but I will be happy to answer specific questions. If you are after colorization of steel, it's going to depend on the steel composition, what sort of wear characteristics you're after, and a couple other variables. It all really comes down to the material you're working with. A LOT of what I know came from http://www.finishing.com/ and reading. |

Has anyone ever tried nitric or sulphuric acid for etching? I don't think it would work for a maker's mark, but it would lead to some interesting textures.

Nitric works very well for a makers mark. Goes very deep, but requires a wax based ground that letters are scribed into.
