Newbie question about a grinder

I am new to making knives, just ordered my first kit on Monday (typhoon)
After this kit I want to start grinding my own blades. I do not have a grinder and I found a adjustable horizontal belt sander with a radial sander at sears, and was wondering if this would work okay for a grinder, or do I need to buy a belt grinder like the Kalamzoo? The sander for sale is a 4" belt sander. http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/produ...id=00921520000

That will work, but it's not the best choice. A big 2" x 72" would be best, for much less a 1" x 42" would be better. I use one like this http://store.yahoo.com/tylertool/desa1bedisa.html though since I forge I don't need to do as much grinding as a pure stock remover. Anything can work with effort though.

You may simply want to grab a decent bench grinder, and throw an Aluminum Oxide "gritty" wheel on it [defiant 1]....

A number of folks started out learning how to grind in that manner.., and not too pricey to get started.

As [AwP] mentions..., of course your best bet is a 2 X 72 by Burr-King, Bader, Wilton, Hardcore.., and the list goes on..., but that's also an expensive way to break in....
