Unfinished Mt Man Folder

The top one has been in a drawer about a dozen years, one of those projects I just sorta lost interest in, remember it took a lot of hammering to draw out the spring saddle where it's pinned. Antler is Elk, blade is proably 1084, it's been a long time. The blade is about 1/8" thick, it should have been 3/16". Maybe it could be reslotted to 3/16".

Cool beans Gene. You know I have requested a Mt. man folder tutorial from you several times in previous posts and then what do you know,I go to your website and there it is Antler And Iron ll, Just what I wanted. I am going out of town for a few days and upon my return I will be ordering it.I wonder how many people realize that you write instructional manuals?Perhaps your advertisement for publishing at the closing of your posts is not clear enough(or perhaps Im to stupid to realize what it meant),but i feel maybe it could be made clearer either way.McAhron

McAhron,

Buy it. Gene's books are great. I think I have a complete set currently and keep thumbing through them. Looking forward to his new one.

Gene, You posting this got me to find the "how to book" I purchased from you years ago. Who knows it may have sparked something.

Gene

Finish this one, it is way to cool to wait any longer.

Posting these folders may have kicked off a new surge in building this type of knife. I think they are just perfect for fur trade, Mountain Man type gatherings.

These are an inspiration.

Mt Man tooling

Ray, go for it, they ain't that hard to do, here is some spring tooling and techniques, bit by bit as I have time to put it on the forum. Forged this tool today, spring tooling, step one in forging the 'Boss" that goes in the antler slot. This was shown in "Hot Shop" but not in photo detail like this, got a new camera, having fun here withthe fly press.

I have a different one used earlier, but thought I'd start out from scratch for this. This was forged under the fly press, it can be done by hand and hammer, a striker would help.

PS: I like to sign my work with my touchmark, no etching, get it hot and whack it!!!!

Gene, just what is this for? I can't figure it. What "Boss"?

Prizzim, that spring is a test piece, mild steel to be super quenched, maybe it work, maybe not, just want to try a real super quench ms spring on a folder. If it don't work, a medium carbon spring can be made.

I need to redo some of my web pages, getting kind of cluttered.

I wasn't worried about material used, I was wondeirng what the Boss was for - never saw that little piece sticking down into the antler before, finally figured it out by reading your stuff.
