Good job. I like it. What would you improve?

The blade has a pretty good finish on it but there are some scratches in it that I didn't get out while sanding. You can actually see it in one of the pics near the point . The other thing is the slot I filed out in the brass. It is not a perfect fit. I actually scrapped my first piece of brass cause I didn't like the fit.

It looks very nice. I especially like the final finish/polish with the brass pieces. That eraser never knew what hit it.

Amazing job, makes me want to throw my first couple of knives in the garbage. How did you achieve such a nice mirror shine on the blade? What was your technique?

Thanks guys.

I'm not really a huge fan of brass but I'm glad I went with it on this knife. It also gets scuffed easy and I am putting it on paper. Quote:

On the hand sanding, have light sources from several directions and use a little occular enhancement looking from all angles between grits. Makes it easier to spot those stealth scratches. Also if there are any areas that look just a bit cloudy, continue sanding until they are gone before going to the next grit, they are scratches.
You did really well with this one. Think I'd use a bar of steel or micarta to back the sand paper. Stones wear as they are used and tend to "dish" just a bit over time losing that true flat surface. As you get up to the final grit a padded backing seems to work better for me. Just have a separate bar with a strip of hard leather glued to it for the final finish. __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H |

Great points Crex. Lighting is a major problem in my garage. I actually have to move around when I want to take a close look because the lights are behind me. Also I want to try the leather.
I may have my second knife done in a few days! |

Strong daylight and florescent lights will expose most "hidden" scratches. I use a sharpie and move around the shop to catch both window light and overhead at different angles then mark the spots with the sharpie. Little troublesome....or is it?
Might use an intense LED flashlights to do the same thing without unmounting the clamped blade. __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H |

Awesome; especially for it being your first knife. Keep it up!
