Finishing Help
I have been using a bunch of maple lately and was wondering about different kinds of finishing techniques both glossy and matte. Wondering what you guys prefer and how to apply with pics of results if possible, thanks ahead of time.

I'm lazy, all my maple gets sent out to be professionally stabilized. Then, all I have to do to finish it is sand to about 400 and buff it (or not if I want a dull finish). The big advantage, as I see it, to stabilized wood is that the finish can never wear off since it goes all the way through the wood. Any other finish coats the outside of the handle and will eventually wear through, or dry out, etc ....

Sand to 600 grit, lightly dampen surface to raise grain, rub with 0000 steel wool, repeat last two steps until the grain will not rise (3 or 4 times should do it).... this will give a nice glossy smooth finish. I 'stain' with aqua fortis+heat, then finish with linseed oil, then wax. You can skip the aqua fortis and go straight to linseed oil for a more blonde appearance, just let the oil soak in really well.
There is a good tutorial on using aqua fortis to stain maple hiding in the archives here, it really brings out the character of the wood. I really love rock/sugar maple, nice and hard, other maples really need stabilizing.

I would second Ray. Maple is by nature a very unstable wood and needs to be stabilized more than most woods.

Maple can be stained with vinegroon this is steel wool dissolved in vinegar. I can't get consistant results but that is part of the fun.
