This old VOGL knife

Must admit I didn't research this one before posting the picture. Maybe VOGL will be recognized by someone, maybe not.

This one seems to have some age to it - and it's beat up pretty bad. The butt cap is missing, unfortunately - and the blade has been abused. Probably a desk knife or lady's knife that ultimately fell into the hands of a child who turned it into what I call S. H. I. T. (Super High Intensity Trash). Anybody who has kids, especially boys, knows what I'm talkin' about. Any thoughts on this one?

I found this but who knows if it's related..... It's a book.

"George Vogl, Toolmaker by H.E. Huttig
LT p.104
\people \tools\hand
Vogl was a toolmaker who specialized in violin making hand tools. These three small pieces sketch what life was like for one group of Europeans after WWII reduced their life to a near pre-industrial state. And since violinmakers have always had a pre-industrial mindset, they got along quite well. With 1 illustration of old tools."

And after checking more closely...... Vogl could be short for Vogler - see below.

"VOGL., AND. see Andreas Vogler; the signatures on many of Vogler's sundials are abbreviated in this way. Zinner 1.
VOGLEN see Vogler. Evans 1.
VOGLER, ANDREAS Germany, fl.1766-1808, MIM Horizontal Sundial, round = OXF; Universal Ring Sundial = Linz Museum; Table Sundial, square = Zeiss Jena; Globe Sundial = STU; made many Augsburg-type sundials for the mass market, including ADL-W239. the brother of Johann Georg Vogler, took over his workshop; the instructions are in French as well as in German Augsburg. Zinner 1; Bobinger 2; Michel 3; USNM; Pipping 1; ADL; Syndram; RSW.
VOGLER, JOHANN GEORG Germany, fl.1740-65, MIM Sundial, 1740 = Würzburg Luitpoldmuseum; Equatorial Sundial, octagonal, 1750 = BM; Horizontal Table Sundials = Berne Historical Museum, Mainz Altertumsammlung; Equatorial Sundials, square = AUG, MERC; made many Augsburg-type sundials for the mass market. brother of Andreas Vogler; "Compassmacher" in 1745; many sundials are signed "I.G.V." or "J.G.V."; Ward did not list the 1750 sundial. Augsburg. Zinner 1; Bobinger 2; Hamilton 1; Syndram; RSW.
VOGLER, JOHANN MICHAEL Germany, 1719, MIM Equatorial Sundial = NMM; Astronomical Clock, 1719 = DEU; Sundial, gilt brass = Amsterdam Sale, 1933. "Uhr- und Kompassmacher." Ellingen. Zinner 1 (Nachträge); Michel 3; Evans 1; RSW.
VOGLER, JOHN USA, c.1830, MIM SIM Surveying Compass = Old Salem, Inc., Wachovia Museum, North Carolina. Salem, North Carolina. USNM."

Nice old Knicker knife. I have a small collection, half dozen plus a few. I don't have a Vogl. but I have seen several examples with that name. A bavarian sock knife. EDC, hunter, utility, all purpose. Very old pattern and still made today by Linder. Counter part to the Scotish Sigian Dubh. Those old sheaths are cool as they are made with thin leather over pressboard like the old Sheffield bowie sheaths. So having one you can see firsthand how they were constructed. Here is a pic of an E.G. Wusthoff. I don't care for it much as I am not a shiney knife guy.

I like the old beatup carbons like these two below. The more knarly and twisted the stag, the better. I feel fortunate to have the little mini that someone just sent me as a bonus when I bought a bigger one. What a nice surprise.

No well dressed alpine hiker is complete without a knicker knife tucked into his leder hosen.

Thumbs up I have similar...

As Roc allowed, Linder still makes them. This one is supposedly from the seventies, and the stag and fittings are VERY cool.

It's a mini Med Bowie with an integral guard....

Buddy, that's a nice little 'user' with a LOT of history buried in it.

Hey, you guys are cood dudes! I appreciate the education and information. That's neat that you both have these. I would've never guessed what it really was. Too bad mine's such a mess. I wish it was in better shape. Maybe it'll go in the "restoration some day" pile. Might make a fun project. Can I assume that the value of something like mine is pretty minimal?

I would think they would have at least some value. To me they're interesting knives. I had not heard of them before, much less seen one. I'll be on the lookout now for sure! Buddy, you can put that in your "To Robert" box, I think that makes 3 now. The box should hold nearly 25 knives, and I'm very, very patient.

Don't get me started, cuz I could go on and on and get into my wish list of Knicker maker pics, or start posting my half finished ones in all stages of.... hey ever see one made by Puma? you can tell Puma made em' just by looking at them. Naw, I notice I start boring people and they wander off. heehee. They use to be pretty cheap on ebay, especially when they are listed by someone who don't know the name. Not anymore. Buddy could expect to pull a bill if he put it up there as a knicker knife.

These are the ones I have. I see there are a couple missing from this shot.

Kewl Roc! I like the 5th from the right, lots of character in that curved stag.
