dilemma

I have an old M1 Garand Bayonet that was modified and re-hafted. I found it at a garage sale years ago. The blade itself is in pretty good shape, but they had put an aluminum cross piece, brass pommel and stacked leather grip.

I let it sit in a drawer for years until last year when I realized it was the perfect knife to act as my every-use Dirk for Medieval reenacting. Not only am I scottish by descent, but my persona is half scottish as well.

I carried it as it was for the first few events of the year, using it for everything from cutting cheese and meat to shaving tinder and splitting kindling. It is a great knife.

I got fed up with the loosness of the stacked leather grip, so I cut it off and found where they had cut off part of the original tang and welded (messily) a threaded rod for the pommel.

This weekend, with the help of a friend, we cut the aluminum cross piece off as well and it is now bare and ready to be re-hafted in a much more appropriate way.

I would like to make Ballock style hilt for it, but now we get to my dilemma. The way the tang meets the blade is not like most knives I have ever seen. There are shoulders on either face of the blade that made the space for the catch on the bayonet when fit to the barrel of the rifle.

How do I make the crescent shaped fitting work with that arrangement? I can fit a wooden grip with burning and drilling to fit the arrangement, but that front of the tang has me stumped. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards,
Tim

I'll post some pictures tonight or tomorrow when I can get to a digital camera. Mine is with the wife far away for the week.
