Overkill Kydex Press
I needed a new jack just cause , and I also needed a Kydex press , I was tired of setting on a board to press , so I built this. Its a bit overkill @ 20 ton , air over hydraulic , but I bet it'll get-er-done. It's made from 3" channel with 3/4" pin so I think it will hold up for many uses.
The three pics show : 1 open , 2 midway , 3 closed and ready. I can also put a piece of foam on the top and adjust acordingly for double sided sheaths. I'm going to try some denim "micarta" soon also , I think it will work for that as well. Dwane |

Dwane,
I think that will do the trick, I think it will be handy for laminating a bunch of materials. I want to make a 3' long version with three rams to laminate gun stock blanks. My kydex press works great, but it aint quite as herky. Its just a lil bitty thing, but works like a charm. Nice work, wish I had the gear for tool fabrication. What type of welder do you have? see ya Mike Last edited by AKmik; 04-14-2015 at 04:22 PM. |

are you gonna put another piece of foam on that press or just press with the bare steel ?

Most people are probably saying " what the hell is that guy thinking , why? )
Cause I love to build tools , and this one serves a dual purpose. Actually probably more than two or three. I have been building some one sided sheaths, with magnets , and I just press with the hard flat surface. I used it a while ago and it works great. Thanks for looking. Dwane |

I think its safe to say there aren't many more powerful kydex machines!
That would win the Tim "The Toolman" Taylor's Tool Time Power Machine Award! You can never have too much power! Nice design!! __________________ God bless Texas! Now let's secede!! |

It looks really good! Do you have to show some kydex done with this machine?

Dwana darn it. I didn't get your pictures for some reason. The picture site says that they are not available any more. I'd sure like to see it though. I thought that mine was a bit overkill, that was until I read about yours. Here is a, dare I say mini version of yours in the manual power method. Hopefully the picture links, etc. will work here.
12 X 12 X 1/2" are the plates that form the press itself. Parchment paper because I'd just finished painting the steel and wanted to keep it pretty for a bit. Press spacer is attached kids blocks. Welded nut on the end of 3/4" Acme althread make the bolts for the press. Utility ratchet I found with a through hole for bolt stock is the means to tighten press. If you look at the first picture there's a bolt stop I made to hold the bolts still while tightening from the threaded end. Also there's a butcher block layer that will take the place of the steel when doing a hybrid holster (wood and no foam) otherwise it will be off the press and just the two steel plates and the kydex rubber (of which I have yet to receive, darn it). I pales in comparison to yours, but I did manage to do this for free (left over steel my son had with the althread already made into bolts from a different project and then a few squirts of paint. It will easily squish the .080 Kydex in a half a turn while I have some 1/8" stuff that I'll try to make gentle bends in for attachment furniture, etc. Loads of fun for sure. Smithy |
