Problem with groove tools clogging
Hi
Been a while I am just starting to make the sheaths for my custom knives. I have two groove tools, and both keep clogging up and won't groove until the tool is cleared. It isn't possible to clear them with a needle- matches are the only answer i have. 1. Why is this happening? 2. How do you clear the clog when it does happen? Thanks in advance Dave |

Possibilities: >this is assuming you have the type that is a "hole in a peg" configuration<
1 - the hole is slightly tapered the wrong way 2 - you have a small (micro) nick or burr that is snagging the cut leather and holding it in the hole. Solution - get a mico reamer (pearl reamer from lapidary supplier) and burnish the hole. Make sure there are no burs by tagging at a cotton ball or Qtip. Polish VERY CAREFULLY with dremel or buffer and clean before using. note: you might be able to use a sail cloth needle (big) and chuck it in your dremel to burnish the inside of the hole __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H |
