Surface Grinder Conversion to Belts?

I've been intrigued with Ed's conversion to belts on his surface grinder. My question though, is what durometer of wheel is preferred for this type of application? I'm thinking it should be harder than the 70 durometer wheel that I am currently using on all my setups. Also, what diameter is ideal?

I am currently playing around with a homemade model and I'm finding that I keep getting chattering or ridges across the test pieces. I'm thinking that it could be because of the wheel being too soft and the diameter being too small. I'm using a 2" 70 durometer wheel right now....

Any insights would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Belts on surface grinders....

Peter,
The contact wheel durometer should be as hard as you can get. I have a 100 durometer, serrated urathane wheel as the contact wheel on my surface grinder.
It cuts very smooth and flat......as long as you don't try to take too large a bite. Generally about .002 is the most I can take on a pass without bogging the machine down.
Both my idler and contact wheel are 6" diameter. Here is the URL where I purchased my wheels.....

Some folks have told me that his wheels have gone up in price, but when I purchased mine, I paid less for the contact, idler (with bearings), and shipping than I would have for a single wheel here in the states. Drop him an email and he will guide you to what you need.

Peter-

Mine is now up and running smoothly. If there is anything I can do to help, just let me know!

It has a simple, quick release belt changing lever, and tracking very similar to my Burr King. It was all pretty simple to put together.

I have the same wheels that Ed does.

Thanks for the assistance gentlemen! I have sent an email to Bertie and am waiting to hear back from him.

One question: Why a serrated wheel Ed? It seems to me like it wouldn't be as flat as a solid wheel. Also more aggressive?

Serrated wheel?

Just as flat as a solid wheel, but more agressive.
