My first fillet knife.
First let me thank Ray Rogers for the tips and advice on making this knife. He always has an answer for all my dumb questions. Thanks Ray.
This isnt anything fancy but im proud of how it turned out for a first fillet. Its for my father in law who wanted a fillet knife that would hold an edge. Hes not worried about rust. And I got spoiled using the CRA from admiral steel. This stuff was the cleanest steel I have used and it cut way down on my time at the disc removing pits. Any tips or advice is welcome. 1095 steel Micarta handles. Thats about it. __________________ Proverbs 27:17 As iron sharpens iron, one man sharpens another. Thanks guys.
Im sure my Father in law will let me know how it works in the field. I wasnt sure about the hollow grind on a fillet but since I dont have a flat platen made yet it was going to have to work. __________________ Proverbs 27:17 As iron sharpens iron, one man sharpens another. You need a flat grind on a fillet knife that is meant to have a flexible blade. Your blade appears to be intended to be fairly stiff (as many are) so you should have no problem with a hollow grind....

That does look like a good overall design. I like the slight upsweep on the blade and the ergonomic handle.
Tell me about that steel, as I am not familiar. How does it HT? How do you think it went as far as hardness testing? __________________ Dennis "..good judgement comes from experience, experience comes from poor judgement.." -Gary McMahan, a cowboy poet and good dancer. http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/p...24112090995576 |

This stuff is cut from a sheet and it was as smooth as glass when I got it. No pits. It was by far the easiest to work with that I have used which isnt saying much though. As far as the heat treat goes I did a search and read where most said 1095 is hard to do properly . I followed Andrew Garrets recipe and it seemed to harden just fine. Is it pearlite ir martinsite or whatever you call it I dont know. It took a razor sharp edge and seems to be holding up well. __________________ Proverbs 27:17 As iron sharpens iron, one man sharpens another. Check out my website. www.crystalcreekknives.com |
