Auto Kit?
Hey Folks. My name's Jason. I know this has been asked before, but you can't catch anything without trolling. I wonder if anyone might know if there is an auto kit available out there. I'm thinking more dissection than masterpiece.
If not, a push in the right direction would be a great help. I think this whole site is really great and appreciate the help I've already received. Thanks much, Jason (Jace). |

Hey Jason,
http://www.knifekits.com/store/s-pag...main.htm~smain The knifekits forum talks about these all the time. I have a couple of different ones on there as well. Give us a shout if you need any more help. Bill |

Bill, maybe I'm none too bright (it's been remarked), but I don't see anything on knifekits that say auto. I see springs & stuff, but I wouldn't know what to do with them if they bit me.
Thanks, Jason |

Sorry Jason,
The DDR3-BL kit has a "button lock". When you install the optional spring, it becomes an auto. You push the button and BAM, the blade snaps open. I think most guys are using the Maxx spring (.375) for the best results. If you use the carbon fiber or G10 from knifekits.com you will need to also add some spacer material to make it closer to the bolster height. Much info on the knife kit forum on that. This is the only auto option available other than the cheap $10 kind of Italian style switchblade kit you can find at some other places. Did that help more? Bill |

Jason,
Knifekits sells a button lock knife. With a little work and a few more parts it can be converted into auto. It is against federal law to sell autos across state lines by using the mail. The information is available to convert this kit if you want, but you won't find it on knifekits.com. --Carl __________________ --Carl N-T Porkin' Pig Price ?? Hi Jace:
I made a DDR3-BL and it is a very nice, strong knife. I'll bet you would be very happy with it. The .375 MAXX spring simply drops in with no modification. It can only go in one way around the blade pivot. You can't go wrong. Enjoy! |

Jace,
Steve is right, it is a great kit, and the conversion is easy. Be sure of your local law though, some states have gone extreme with just owning a switchblade. --Carl __________________ --Carl N-T Porkin' Pig Price ?? KN Auctions to help a member in need and score a GREAT deal! ?? |

I always hear of the MAX spring working so well. Does the 'standard' spring NOT work so well? I'd like to hear from someone who doesn't need a hemi...

Hi Coop:
I have never used the standard spring. Only the MAXX spring. In my very limited experience, the MAXX spring kicks the blade open, but it should be kicked open with more power. So I feel the MAXX is OK, but should be stronger. I can only assume the standard spring has even less power. |

Same as Steve.
Sometimes to get the blade pivot just tight enough to align the blade when closed, the Maxx spring is still a little weak. I usually use phosphorous-bronze washers but even then have to add a little WD40 (drop) that helps speed it up. When it DOES work right it'll almost come out of your hand! Haven't tried the standard spring. Bill |

Hi BMiller:
Knifekits told me not to use the washers with this kit. Did you grind down the stock circular ridges around the pivot and replace them with the washers? I cannot get the blade on my DDR3-BL completely centered when the blade is closed. I've twisted and pried both sides to do so. No good. As you said you can only adjust that pivot screw so much before the blade binds up and wou't auto open. |
