Saw blade as blade material
I found a couple of old two man saws in the barn today. Hard to tell how old they are. I was thinking of using them to make some knives but they are flexable and seem really thin to me. Anyone had any experiance trying this? Was wondering if I would be wasting my time with it.
Thanks |

Really old saws were a steel bit forge welded to mild or wrought iron. Later saws were commonly something between 1060 and 1080. For the thinness of these saws, forging would take a lot of care but grinding for small or flexible (think fillet) knives could work. You may find yourselve reheat treating the blades to get what you want or if you overheat the blades when grinding.

It might be worth more sold to tourists as an " antique" !! Then you could buy a known steel and make things easier !

Good point. I had thought of that. They look to thin to forge with but had considered stock removal to make a couple blades with them. Thanks for the input. At least I have an idea of what king of steel they may be. Frank |
