movement while grinding
I am curious which of these two ways everyone prefers to move the knife while grinding the bevel.
1) moving the tang on the yaw axis. (meaning moving the tang away from the belt on a plane parallel to the ground) 2) moving the tang on the roll axis. ( meaning moving the tang down towards the ground) I have tried them both and they both seem to work but I am curious if one is better than the other. I currently use method #1. |

Keep using method #1 as it is less prone to mistakes.

I may not be the best one to ask but I would say whatever you are most comfortable with. Whatever gives you most control and consistency. Me I typically draw from plunge line to tip, which as Jim stated above is "less prone to mistakes' particularly around the plunge line/ricasso transition. But I have tried (as suggested from another site which was helpful in grinding) moving the belt off the platen and pushing the plunge line over it giving a smooth transition from blade to ricassso without a sharply defined plunge line.

I sort of do both. I always start with the tang angled down and grind the length of the blade while yawing the tang as I get near the tip. Whatever works ....
