|
New knife... need advice.
Hey guys,
I'm working on a knife from some scrap I had left over and I realized I wasn't sure what to do when I attach it to the antler. Should I put anything in between the back edge of the blade and the antler? Also, the blade isn't ready to be placed in the handle, it's still in pre-heat treated condition, I just have to wait until the weekend to harden and I wanted some ideas so I could prep the antler __________________ -Hunter

Normally, a small guard or ferrule would be placed between the blade and the handle material ...

Would the ferrule just be a piece of metal sanded down to close to the antler's shape?

Or....you could cast the guard in place out of pewter. Not as hard as some think.

Haven't seen that done? Where could you get pewter and how would you cast it?

You don't have to...
 But, most folks expect something. You can get lead free pewter or babbit metal from Roto-Metals. The mold can be made of paper held with tape where you want to pour the pewter. A medium duty soldering iron can be use to smooth out the pewter where it meets the blade so that you don't have a little dip there.

Prowl a few thrift stores. You can get good pewter for a fraction of the price of new material. Just don't guy anything not marked "pewter". Lot of fake stuff out there.
Pewter melts at just over 400*F and can easily be melted with a Lp torch. An old deep-bowled steel soup ladle (another thrift store item) makes a good melting pot and applicator. Make your mold from paper or very thin cardboard (I mainly use old business cards) and blue masking tape. Preheat your soldering iron (needs to be ready). Pour the pewter as soon as it melts completely - too high a temp will make it frosty. Note: Do this in a nonflamable nonmeltable area. A big aluminum cooky sheet under your vise will work well to catch spills and overruns. Do not try to hold in your hands while doing it.....you'd be surprised how many try this! (but only once) I posted a tutorial on this several years back, but it seems to have eluded my searches, both here and in my personal files.
