In the zone
I had a rather productive weekend i finished one knife and started shaping 8 others. Once i started rough grinding i noticed i was in the zone and the grind lines started looking better with each one I did, so i ended up rough grinding them all.
The first two knives on pic one are part of a three piece set of kitchen knives im making for a client. His hands are so dam big that i actually had to wear gloves while holding the knives to assure that they would be comfortable for him to use. [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] This is the knife i finished, the pic is horrible. steel 1075/1080 3" blade Cocobolo handle home made brass stainless and auminum pins [IMG][/IMG] |

Hey, that's what practice is all about. Looking pretty good.
The finished one looks great, but you might want to take a needle and get those little flakes of brass out of the wood (if I'm seeing right), then rewax. Little touches like that make a diff. __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H |

Thanks for the compliment Carl.
I looked at the other few pics i had if you are referring to the two dots behind the lanyard hole they must have been lint from using a shop towel to buff out the tung oil as they weren't in any other pics. |

Looks good, esp like the big cleaver. The Cocobolo is very nice.

Thanks Ricky. He said he wanted a paring knife, chefs knife, and something larger. I figured that chopper would fit the bill, anything larger and i would need to make another forge for the HT.

Thanks Julius, Ive had that board of highly figured cocobolo for a while now just begging to be used. The sharp finger was a little small to show off such a rich grain pattern it but it still looks alright. I need to make a large handled knife with the same wood. there is a section of the cocobolo board that the grain resembles a mountin range with a knot that looks like a setting sun.

Good deal on the lint. Brass sandings and filings get in the darnest places sometimes.

Well it has been a while since i looked at the cocobolo board i thought it was a lot smaller. i still think it looks like a mountain range but there is no way im getting all of this on a knife. But i can get a few more handles with at least one knot on them.

Make a really big knife........
Nice colors in that board. You are wearing a respirator when you grind that stuff aren't you? __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H |

Yeah, i have a P95 respirator but i think it needs a new filter as its getting difficult to inhale with it on.

Change 'em out. Don't need to get woozy and pass out while grinding (or any other knifemaking process). If your shop is like most of the rest of us, too many hard, sharpe, pointy, and hot things to manuver around while you are alert.
It's a sure sign of a novice if you see rust and wood stains on his cheeks from where he's been "napping" on the floor, not to mention that big goose egg on his noggin and the blood caked on his forearm. Be safe brother! __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H |

That wood is beautiful. Where did you come by such a large piece? I'm still looking for handle material.
