Help With Knife Bowie? Cal Corps Army?

I recently purchased a large knife from an estate. A little faded it looks to be marked Cal Corps Army on the blade. Any help with identification?? Thanks... Chris

Some pics would help. Flatbed scans work the best with closeups of the lettering.

Comparing your pic to an illustration in LG4, looks like you may have an original in a sea of reproductions. Still waiting for a solid answer from the swami.

Knowing nothing about knives but knowing a lot about the estate this came from I can guarantee you it will be authentic. Any background info on the knife and maker??

Should read:

Hospital Corps
U.S. Army

Model 1887 should have came with a leather sheath with a brass throat. 1,000 were made at the Springfield Armory. Two variations on the blade style. A similar knife was made by Collins. Which one do you have? I don't know either. Trying to find out.

A ritzy estate does not mean they could not have junk or very clever fakes. That a good way to get ripped off but good my friend. Do not guarantee anything. Especially with knives and extraspecially with military knives. Please don't ask me how I know.Still waiting word from the wiser than me.

Alright...I give I have sent pictures to Mr. Levine to inspect and have requested his personal opinion as to authenticity, condition, age and manufacturer. I will post his findings when he completes his analysis. Thanks for the direction.

Bernard Levine has confirmed that the knife is authentic. Here is the first letter that I received:

Thank you for your inquiry and payment.

The knife is a US Army Model 1887 Hospital Corps knife.

I will review authenticity and value with specialist dealers, and get back to you later
this week. This knife has been widely reproduced recently, but your example does appear to
be original

The etched panel out on the blade read:
HOSPITAL CORPS
~ U. S. ARMY ~

The scabbard was marked on the front of the suspension loop, which is missing from this
example.

Only 1,056 of these knives were made (650 in 1889, 406 in 1891), so they are relatively
rare. The knives were made in Springfield Armory in Massachusetts. The design was based on
the U.S. Model 1880 hunting knife. The scabbards were made in
Watervliet Arsenal in New York.

BRL...

SECOND LETTER In Part

I have heard back from two experts.........

Mike Silvey is the author of several books on military knives. Frank Trzaska owns
www.usmilitaryknives.com and is the most diligent and successful researcher of actual
government and contractor documents about US military knives. They are two of the three
co-authors of a widely regarded price guide to US military knives and bayonets.......

Silvey: "I believe it is the real deal......

Traszka: "Looks like the real thing to me........

Knife will be for sale in the near future, when that time comes I will let anyone who is interested know.

Thanks
