Dampen the edge with water and take a polished flat piece to rub briskly back on forth down the edge. This will compact the leather grain and allow it to polish out. I after I dampen the edge rub some saddle soap on it before I rub it out.
Polished piece can be plastic or even the handle of a leather tool will be enough. I have a friend that rubs the edge with canvas to polish it out. |

I dampen the edge of the leather with a wet finger and burnish it. I use an old wart hog tooth that wasn't as useful for a knife handle as I thought it would be but just about anything hard an smooth will do. After I burnish it out with the water, I repeat the process with Gum Tragacanth for a little better finish on the edge. You can get it at just about any supply house that sells leather working supplies.

If you are a knife maker as well, just put a very slick worn out 220 or 320 belt on, dampen the leather with a wet sponge and burnish at high speed.......slick and shiney. With practice you can roll the edges for that finished look and complete the task very quickly.
THen follow up with the Gum-T and a "bone folder" (polishing stick talked about above) I use an old antler tine and a slip of polished micarta - different shapes for different areas. __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H |
