Accordion fold
Hi
I am planning on forging a blade using 15N20 and 1084. I would like to do an accordion fold, but would like a little info before I attempt it. About how many layers should be folded before doing the accordion? Once the accordion is flattened out, do you fold it again? I realize that these are general questions, but all I am looking for is some general guidelines. Thanks Brian |

Accordion folding.........
Brian,
The accordion fold is a method used whenever you create a mosaic, where all of the pattern is in the end view of the bar. The method is used in order to take the pattern from the end of a bar, to the flat sides. It is usually the last step for standard mosaic damascus. I have, for various reasons, accordion folded billets and then rewelded them, but those were cases where I wanted a specific pattern and had to to it in order to achieve them. If you've not tried this before, be warned....... it is a very wasteful method, where you can expect to loose 40% to 70% of the overall billet. Make sure you remove all the sharp corners where the steel will fold open. If you don't, it will likely tear on you. The problem with accordion folding is that one side of the "hinge" is place under tremendous compression, while the opposite side place under severe tension. It sound tough, but if you use the right heat and don't get over zelous with the hammer, it should work for you. __________________ WWW.CAFFREYKNIVES.NET Caffreyknives@gmail.com "Every CHOICE has a CONSEQUENCE, and all your CONSEQUENCES are a result of your CHOICES." |

Thanks for the info Ed. I think that I may wait a while before trying an accordion. The 40 - 70 % loss is more than I expected.
