3v Katana

Well it's been a while yet again, it took longer then what I origanly planed that it would for the sword to be compleated but now it has finally arived! I must say I am very pleased with it's design and and funcion and now with out any further adue for thos of you that are interested the report.

When I first got the sword I inspected it and I tested to see how sharp it was. it passed the shaveing test with flying colors so then I moved on to the good stuff first I tried it out on some tree branchs at first I had a little difficulty going thru an inch and a half to two inch brachs but evenually I improved my techniqe to where going thru 2 1/2 inch branchs with out much of a problem. Next I moved on to some 2 by 2s the first one I did I managed to cut thru 90% of the way and it just broke the rest the next 3 after words I did a clean cut all the way thru. and finally I tested it on some 3/4 of an inch plywood, on this I managed to get a 3 and 1/4 inch slash down into it. All and all I'm very impressed, and for thos that are wondering even after all that it can still shave.

3v is a very good matrial for a sword and even tho the S30v didn't work out how I had hoped 3v is just as good in my opinion because it still has very low maintence. Just keep it dry or if you do get it wet wipe it off right away or just use a very light coat of of oil and your good. Perhaps the day of the all mighty true stainless sword will come to be in the future but for right now I'm all out of money and content with what I have.

I would like to thank all thos that replyed to my S30v sword thred, all of your input was very helpful and if you have any more questions about my 3v katana just ask.

Heres the whole picture of both the sword and the sheeth. for the most part the design of the sword was my idea with some helpful addons here and there from Dan. The blade as you all know is made of 3v and it's at rc 61. The handle is a blue and black G10 with cord wrap. I don't remember what the finish on the blade is exactly any more so Dan can get back to you on that and with anything els he wants to add.

Here is a close up of the guard, it is made of a Titanium alloy and has been heat colored to varius shades of blue and purple. The cut out and groove patern are also my design and I think it really makes this katana special.

Thumbs up

Fantastic!

Was it done as stock removal, or was it forged?
I'm just starting to plan a stock removal katana for this summers big project.....

It's stock removal. From what I understand about 3v is that it comes pretty much as good as it gets from a metalurgical stand being both good in being extreamly uniform and having small grain size. You would get little to no benifit from forging unless of course your just doing it to get that special look or or perhaps a curve in the blade.

1095, clay backed quench for the hamon. in oil, in a "half pipe with ends" style quench tank. I have an old barrel stove(55gal.) that I'm going to convert to a forge, for heating it for the quench. as far as tempering it..... I'm still working on that. I picked 1095 because it my current working steel, easy to work, HTs easily, and fairly in-expensive if I screw up 4 feet of it.

BTW, What thickness stock do you start with? for mine I was thinking 3/16" at the spine for a 28"-29" blade,37"-38" overall. I am planning slightly more curve than this one has.

Send a message via Yahoo to Dragon cutlery
i would go to about 1/4 on the spine or at its thickest 3/16 could work but most of the swords i have seen that felt real good where thicker than 3/16 at the guard
