Gary's right, and thanks for jumping in here bud. The fact is, a dull sword is still a very dangerous weapon; a broken sword is not. Wear resistance just isn't much of an issue in this category of blades. Toughness is what matters.

Ok thanks, I think I'm still going to stick with s30v because its stainless and still pretty tough. Plus I just know a whole lot more about it then these other cpm steels. I still need a recomondation from some one on who could make me a sword.

Hello Ssj2

I am currently making a sword out of S30V. It is a katana with a 27in blade

I will probable send it to be head treated next week. When it gets back I will test it to see how good it is.

If I am satisfied I would consider making another one.

How long of sword do you want?
how would you use this sword?

Dan

Hi Dan, I also would like a katana I was thinking around 31 to 32inch total leangth about a 23 to 24inch blade or so more ninja style. I would probably use it to cut thru bushs and small tree limbs.

When do you think your sword will be all done?

How hard did you make it in heat treating?

Chris

Hi Chris

I will have the blade hardend to about 58RC. I think that this will give the the sword a good balenc of Toughness and edg holding ability. I have to send the blade to Tennesee for HT so it may be a couple of weeks before I can test it.

here is my Email adress
dancbr929@hitmail.com

let me know exactly what you want. If you leave a phone # I can call to talks more about specific details

Guys,

If I were going to use a CPM steel for something like a sword then I would consider using S3V. Though S30V is an excellant steel, it won't compare in toughness to S3V on something like the use a sword will get. With either steel, I would only use someone to heat treat it that has experience with the CPM steels in that they are difficult to H/T correctly and that's the secret to blade quality. See past threads for detailed discussions on this.

Gary

Though 3V is an excellent steel, it can't compare to S30V's stainlessness.

58rc sounds great Dan I would agree that would be the optimum hardness for toughness and edge holding for a sword made of s30v.

I decided on the sword I want. I want a strait style ninja sword, full tang, 25inch blade with a 91/2 inch handle.

I've never made a sword before and the only one I have is a wall hanger. The handle on it is plastic wraped in fiber cord. Its a nice handle but I'm sure theres far better materals out there to do the job. What are you making your handle out of?

I'll email you a scetch of the desine I came up with for my sword if you would like to see it.

Ssj2,

Please keep us informed on the project. I'm interested in your design and the final cost.

Steve

I think you're supposed to test them on criminals, bisecting them from various angles, sometimes in stacks...

Hi guys. My own input:

This is an active duty Combat sword that has seen service (yes, the REAL thing) in Afghaninstan and Iraq. It is 440c, a very fine steel to make a sword with. Careful attention was given to hardness, temper, grind, profile, and mounts, with lightly graduated temper and consideration for center of percussion as well as center of impact, rugged durability and use.
Here's another:

This rapier is historically correct, with an active Pas d' ane, fully graduated temper, half length cannelures, and piercing, with fully graduated temper from 54 at the tip to 60 at the ricasso. 440C again.

This could work. I am getting a job with the county corrections department.

However I don't think it would be good for job security.
