Jerry - any word on powdered 154CM yet?

Jerry, awhile ago you mentioned Crucible was going to make a powdered 154CM. Have you heard anything on that yet? RWL-34 is stuck in customs for 3 weeks now and it's too expensive to boot.

Still waiting. I'm told they'll have samples at Blade so it can't be too far away.

Was this the "new knife steel" announcement from Eugene?

Trace,
Just a thought, have you checked with Downie in Canada for RWL34?

Craig

No, I haven't. I'll try him. I'm off to do that now. Should have thought of that earlier. Thanks Craig.

It probably was Gabe, though they may have mentioned the 154CM/CPM-3V Damascus that Devin Thomas and I are working on (well, Devin's doing the work; I'm just playing).

Both should be great steels. I should be getting the damascus in shortly.

That sounds really cool.

In a pattern welded steel, does the impact strength of one steel help cushion the other in the way that carbon does in cast iron?

The short answer is yes; it should be very tough. This Damascus happened as a result of a chance meeting of Devin, Dick Barber of Crucible, Paul Bos and myself at the Shot Show. It was kinda like the four poles of the compass meeting in the center, but was a fascinating conversation.

The first batch will be in Devin's Raindrop pattern. Besides being functional it should be very striking visually, since both steels can be given a fairly high finish but the 3V utterly refuses to polish, so a very mild etch followed by a quick brush should look spectacular. I'm really excited to try it. Both steels will be at ~Rc61. The carbides in the 154CM will be refined by the forging. Just everything about this combination says, yes!

Once the 154CM is available as powder, as 3V is now, the bladesmiths should be able to do some pretty amazing stuff with the combination as well.

With some luck, I'll have a blade in this at the Blade Show.

Please forgive this but I beleive the correct term is not 'powder' but PARTICAL. Now, this thread is interesting because a CPM 154 would be a great, I assume, alterrnate to the relatively expensive RWL-34.

I tryed just a few moments ago to find the thread on BF that also addresses this question. On one of my recent threads about RWL-34 Mete posted that Crucible was planning to come out with a CPM version of 154CM - but then later I remember seeing from somebody that it did not work out as they had hoped it would. Unless I dreamed this, someone (and I can't find it now) said Crucible was going to add some vanadium to the mix to fix the problem. It does make sense when you explore CPM chemistry and RWL-34 does have some vanadium in it too.

Anyhow, that's all I know about it and I hope it works well. This way we can have a state side CPM alternative to RWL-34 and a real ass kicker to the Japanese ATS-34. (not talking them down. I love both RWL-34 and ATS-34.)

I have found I can do the same thing with RWL-34 at 61 HRc that I can with ATS-34 at 59 - 60 HRc. So, a CPM 154 would be great for us. Still expensive but a good price competetion to RWL-34.

RL

I think I posted this once already somewhere, but we talked to Dick Barber while at the Blade show, and he had just seen the pictures (don't know exactly what those are, microscopic or what) and he said that the CPM 154-CM didn't come out how he wanted it to, and to fix that, he was going to add nitrogen and vanadium, which would make it more like BG-42 than 154-CM, which makes me for one even more excited about it. This isn't going to be competition for RWL-34, this is going to be even better. This steel may just kick S30V off of it's throne as the most popular big-market knife steel. Of course they wouldn't care, as they make S30V. I think it will be awesome anyway.

Who is dick barber and what is his email? I'll start pestering him for a date and some more details. I'm running low on steel and will have to place some orders and will hold off if it's close to release.

Dick Barber is the main nerd guy over at Crucible Mills. I think my father knows his contact information, but it's not mine to give out anyway, even if I did know it. My father loves studying metallurgy, and if he cannot explain away problems with damascus (that happen occasionally when he is trying strange materials) he goes and talks to somebody who knows more than himself.

I have a sample of the first batch, but haven't been able to use it yet. Pops has most of the first batch I understand so it's available. I think a second batch is underway, so it's here to stay.
