DIY: Water Bottle Lights
These are a cool idea for creating light in places that you may not have power, or just don't want to use it!
You can make them removable, if you might live in a place where deep freezing may occur. Also, if you know your chemistry, you might put something inert in the resulting solution to drop the freezing point even further. The freezing point of a 12% chlorine bleach/h2o solution is around -5F. Note to self: Add to "End Of World Kit", 1 gallon of chlorine bleach and an extra tube of White Lightening. __________________ Alex Whetsell [======]~~~~~~~> Atlantavirtual.com Atlanta NOC |

Pretty cool Alex! Wonder if an antifreeze (glycol) would work, could get a variety of lighting colors then.
Remember the old ship pyramid lenses? Some of them were 3' square. They used them aboard sailing ships to get more light below decks. Very rare finds now and quite pricey. Someone did a revival of the concept with "Tube" skylights for subterranean homes. Saw it many years ago in the old "Mother Earth News" and again later in an issue of "Backwoods Home". Think they were using old photo enlarger magnifier lenses. __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H Last edited by Crex; 12-19-2011 at 06:14 AM. |

Carl,
I just did a lookup on "tube skylights" and got all kinds of information. Those are really cool! Alex __________________ Alex Whetsell [======]~~~~~~~> Atlantavirtual.com Atlanta NOC |

That is cool! I would try it here, but it gets too cold to have that big of a hole in my roof.

Alex, I'm almost stunned at that concept. Really ingenious. I can't understand why it hasn't been done all over the world by now.
The stars and moon probably give out enough light to navigate inside a house. |

Thats really a good idea for the type of dwellings many, many people in the Philippines live in.
That video was shot near Manila, Philippines, but I'm an American currently living in Cebu, Philippines and I can see this idea really coming in handy. I've read electricity here is some of the highest priced in the world and yet 1/3-1/2 the country literally lives off $1 a day. So there are many people here without electricity and could use this bottle system. In the squatter areas the houses are so tightly packed together often the roofs are touching, so even installing windows won't help a lot with lighting. Thanks for posting the video Alex, I'm going to share it with some people around here and see if we can get the idea to catch on in this area. People get light,, bottles get used instead of incinerated, and some handyman would have another source of revenue. Win-win situation. |
